Piani di Bobbio is a well-known ski resort not far from Milan, making it a popular destination, especially in winters with sufficient snowfall like this year. I had never been there before, mainly because I don’t ski or snowboard. However, after the pleasant surprise of my recent hike to the nearby Piani di Artavaggio, I thought it would be interesting to try a similar ascent, starting from almost the same parking area in Moggio. This is a highly strategic location, just an hour from Milan, yet the gateway to many hiking opportunities.
From here, we took a trail that begins with a steep incline, then eases up in the middle section as it winds along the mountainside, before rising again in the final stretch leading to the ski resort.
Upon arrival, we found an extremely commercialized environment, not exactly the ideal spot for those who enjoy the mountains as a reward for a strenuous hike. The crowd resembled a village festival, despite the fact that it wasn’t a particularly beautiful day. The partly cloudy sky obscured the surrounding peaks.
Additionally, the ski slopes made it difficult, if not impossible, to hike through the valley. Because of this, we had to abandon our original plan of completing a loop and instead retraced our steps. We only deviated from our original route in the final stretch to explore an alternative path.
Overall, it was a nice experience. The trail was enjoyable, and once at Piani di Bobbio, we had an excellent lunch at one of the many mountain huts. However, it is undeniable that there are better destinations for those who aren’t interested in skiing.
About the trail
The trails we followed were rated for hikers (E) and experienced hikers (EE). Some sections were more exposed, and due to snow and ice, crampons and a certain level of experience were necessary at times.
