Just over a year ago, I hiked a few stages of the Sentiero Roma, descending exhausted from the Gianetti Refuge to the Bagni di Masino. After four days of walking, I returned home with my feet completely wrecked.
As a result, I missed out on the final stage we had planned, from the Gianetti Refuge to the Omio Refuge. I was eager to revisit this beautiful area and finally visit the Omio Refuge.
We started our hike from the village of San Martino and made our way up to the Omio Refuge, reaching it in just under two hours. Unfortunately, we couldn’t complete the loop by reaching the Gianetti Refuge and descending from there, as the summer season had already ended. The Omio is the only refuge along the Sentiero Roma still open, and only on weekends with good weather.
Trail notes
The trail is fairly straightforward and doesn’t require as much physical preparation as the other stages of the Sentiero Roma, though some fitness is still necessary.
The key is to follow an up-to-date GPX track because the available maps show paths that likely haven’t been used in quite some time, and we weren’t able to find them.
