One of the trails I know well and have hiked several times in my life is the one that starts from Brunate, just above the city of Como, and leads to Monte Palanzone after crossing Monte Boletto, Monte Bolettone, Pizzo dell’Asino, and other smaller peaks.
You can drive up to the parking area in Brunate, but if you prefer, you can also start from Como by taking the cable car that quickly transports you to Brunate.
Unfortunately, it’s not a loop trail, but even by following the same path, you can take advantage of some small variations that allow you to decide whether to bypass the various peaks encountered along the way.
The view is magnificent, and from an orientation standpoint, it’s a fundamental experience. Being in the center of Lake Como, you can recognize numerous peaks around, and in the future, it will be quite easy to spot the summit of Monte Palanzone.
From Brunate to Monte Palanzone
The trail is not technically difficult, and the elevation gain is minimal, about 1,000 meters. Of course, in the winter months, as in this case, it’s necessary to have the proper equipment, especially crampons or microspikes.
From Palanzone to Brunate
Since you’ll essentially be retracing your steps on the way back, the return journey will be even smoother, as it follows a mostly wide, gently undulating, and clearly marked trail.
