The majestic peak of Monte Legnone, nestled in the heart of the Alps, soars to an impressive altitude of 2,610 meters above sea level, making it one of the prominent peaks in the vicinity of Como Lake.
It commands a dominating presence over the province of Lecco and the western expanse of the Orobie Alps. With its pyramidal allure, marked by strikingly regular contours, it serves as a sentinel between Lake Como and the Valtellina, effectively demarcating the latter from Valvarrone, an adjoining valley to Valsassina.
What sets Legnone apart is the breathtaking panorama it offers, unrivaled in the Central Alps, owing to its isolation from peaks of comparable stature.
Nestled within the Legnone massif is a small permanent glacier known as Nevaio del Colombano, nestled at an elevation of 2,360 meters. To the west of the massif lies a secondary peak, Legnoncino, which rises to an elevation of 1,711 meters.
Our journey began from the Roccoli Lorla hut, serving as the perfect starting point to savor a revitalizing coffee before embarking on our adventure and to relish a delightful, invigorating lunch upon our return.
About the trail
The trail starts off gently from here and gradually becomes more challenging as you approach the summit. It’s only in the final meters that you encounter some safety chains. Fortunately, we didn’t experience the dreaded wind gusts for which this mountain is famous. Nevertheless, it’s advisable to have some experience and not be afraid of exposed paths if you intend to hike this trail.
