In the past, I had already reached the summit of Northern Grigna, starting from Balisio and taking the winter route on the way up and the summer route on the way back. It’s a path I will undoubtedly repeat in the future.
This time, however, we opted for the trail that starts from the Cainallo parking lot and leads to the summit along the famous Cresta di Piancaformia. This ridge offers spectacular panoramic views and includes some technical passages, but it provides immense satisfaction.
Reaching the summit is enhanced by the presence of the Brioschi refuge, where you can recharge with a hot tea. Just a little higher, you’ll find the summit cross with a breathtaking view of the mountains surrounding Lake Como. Among them, you can easily identify Monte San Primo, Monte Crocione, Monte Bregagno, Pizzo di Gino, and Monte Legnone. On a particularly clear day like this, you can even make out the massive Monte Rosa.
About the trail
The trail starts gently from the last parking area in Cainallo (a couple of kilometers after the refuge of the same name). Things get more serious once you embark on the Cresta di Piancaformia trail, which is occasionally exposed and sometimes requires technical maneuvers. However, it lacks via ferratas or similar situations. Some experience and good technical skills are definitely necessary to navigate the more challenging sections. As you approach the summit, the path descends slightly before rising again for the final stretch to the Brioschi refuge. Here, you’ll encounter some chains that help prevent slipping on the smooth rocks. The chilly gusts of wind can make these passages a bit more demanding. It’s essential not to forget your gloves.
For the return journey, we took a more comfortable trail that descends from the summit toward the Bogani refuge. We took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a revitalizing lunch there. The cuisine is excellent, and a festive atmosphere was ensured by the presence of a local duo of musicians singing traditional songs. From the Bogani refuge to the parking area, it’s a leisurely and invigorating stroll.
