When we considered this excursion, our goal was to mentally and physically prepare ourselves to hike Monte Rosa, from Rifugio Mantova to the famous Capanna Margherita. The idea was to replicate, albeit at a lower altitude, an even more challenging effort in terms of elevation gain. This was to give us a reasonable confidence in our ability to reach the summit of Monte Rosa later on.
Therefore, after reaching Rifugio Frasnedo, we woke up at dawn to embark on the trail towards Pizzo Ligoncio. Taking into account the necessary breaks and a not too brisk pace on the extensive scree-covered plateau leading to the top of Ligoncio, it took us nearly 12 hours to ascend and return to the refuge. Essentially, from dawn to sunset.
Physically and mentally exhausted, we achieved our goals. I can confirm that since that day, whenever I fear not having enough physical or mental energy during an excursion, I think back to this day, and the awareness of this challenging trail always gives me the strength to reach new heights.
About the trail
The path ascends moderately and steadily to the summit. In its initial part, it is more comfortable and well-marked. Afterwards, an extensive scree-covered area makes the hike uncomfortable.
