Sasso Gordona is one of the most iconic and recognizable peaks in the Lugano Prealps, straddling the border between Italy and Switzerland. While most of the mountain is situated in Italy, with its highest peak reaching 1,410 meters, it is located in the municipality of Schignano d’Intelvi. This area has a history as a former border and smuggling zone between the two countries, with old finance guard barracks converted into refuges, such as the Prabello Refuge.
Fun Fact: Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t at its best that day, and due to heavy fog, there was a minor incident with the drone. As it was returning to base, it collided directly with the cross positioned on the summit of the mountain, luckily without causing any damage.
About the trail
For this hike, we chose a direct route to the summit, parking our car on Swiss territory in Cabbio and taking the trail from there leading to Sasso Gordona. The trail is well-marked, with a manageable elevation gain, except for the very final part of the ascent where you may encounter chains to assist you in the last meters.
